Magazine Evaluation

What was the theme for the project?
The theme for the project was to create a magazine cover on a topic of our choice. I opted for 'Fashion & Beauty' mainly because that's the sort of area I am interested in, also I felt confident in choosing this topic because I am able to relate to it and are able to talk about it.

How have you developed your ideas? How did your work change through the project?
At the beginning I had sketched out a plan of the layout I wanted my magazine cover to follow in order to develop and project my ideas. I gained a lot of inspiration and ideas from other magazine covers that already exist, I researched various styles of magazine and pin pointed the key aspects on the magazine covers that I could use but change it and make it my own.

How many pictures did you take? Do you think you should have done more or less?
All together we took around 100 photos but in the end we narrowed it down to about 4 each, that we wouldn't mind each other using. Afterwards we decided which one we were going to use. I am happy that we took a lot of photos because it meant we had a wide variety of different photographs to choose from, we took pictures in different places mainly because we couldn't really find the correct lighting so we had to keep changing places. I wanted a elegant photograph on the front of my magazine cover, meaning that we had to try different types of poses in order for it to look right. I wanted my photo to be elegant so that it related to the 'Fashion & Beauty' topic.

What artists or designers have you looked at to help and inspire you?
I looked at relevant, similar magazine brands, including; Elle, Company, Cosmopolitan, Vogue and many more, because they each had a similar style it was easier to gather lots of elegant, chic ideas which looked perfect for the type of magazine cover that I wanted to create.

What materials, tools and techniques did these artists use?
On most Fashion and/or Beauty magazines, a main model will be the only image on the front cover along with the various features that are added to it, the model will be the first thing the reader's eye goes to so it is vital that the image draws attention, and is eye catching. This is often achieved by using bright, vibrant colours or funky make up. Magazine cover designers will use various colours but it will depend on the audience they are aiming it at, normally only 2 or 3 key colours are incorporated in the cover, and these key colours will derive from the model's make up or clothes. By using just 2 of 3 colours it helps the magazine to look sophisticated and ordered, and most importantly, aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

How have your skills developed during the project?
Throughout this project, my skills for Photography and Photoshop have both developed. For Photography my skills have really developed. I have learnt about lighting and the different angles that create a elegant photograph. I have learnt about the best and worst camera angles in order to help me take a successful photograph that will look sophisticated on my magazine cover. My topic was Fashion & Beauty so I instantly knew my main image was going to have to be either a central photo which was face on or a image taken with the model on the side rather than facing forwards. I have gained more knowledge in the certain angles that attract readers attention and particular angles that make the models facial features stand out. Personally I think my skills for Photoshop have really developed also, I have learnt brand new things like changing the contrast of a photograph and have learnt about saturation levels and air brushing. It's definitely an area I am comfortable in.

Are there any aspects of your studies that you wish you had explored further?
I would have liked to have explored different styles of fonts, there was so many to choose from that I just didn't know where to look. I sort of just chose ones that I saw rather than actually looking through the different styles and picking the perfect one. I think I would have liked to do further research on magazine titles because I don't think my current magazine title 'Rouge' sounds elegant enough. Also maybe if I had researched more magazines I would have had more ideas to look at for my final magazine cover.

How have you used formal elements such as line, tone, colour and shape?
I altered the levels of Saturation on the image in order to create better, more appealing contrast. For the colour scheme, I used two key colours and made the features of the magazine look professional with those colours. I used a dark crimson red which originated from Charlotte's lipstick and the black which originated from the masthead, the only reason for this was that there weren't really any other colours I could have included because the different colours on her jacket are not visible on the cover as it's too dark and if I had used the blue background colour it would have looked too bright and will have looked less professional with three colours as the lighter blue a red will not have complimented each other.

What materials did you use, and why? Did they work successfully?
I used Photoshop to produce my magazine and I used Dafont.com for the font's that I have incorporated on my magazine cover, I also used Google Images in order to get the bar code image and the other various images on the front cover (shoe, necklace, lipstick, and nail polish spill) personally I think they've all worked very successfully.

What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
My main goal was to produce a magazine that was really appealing and eye catching to the female teenage audience of my age range. I tried to achieve this buy including eye catching cover lines that I knew would attract female attention, e.g 442 Hot Right Now Buys, Best of Beauty, and Make-Up Trends, if I had come across a magazine that had these particular cover lines I would definitely have picked it up because all they all draw me in. I kept referring to myself thinking, would I pick up this magazine up if I came across it in the shop? So I tried to contain aspects that attracted myself because I know some girls my age will be interested in similar things to me like fashion, make-up and food! I made sure the cover lines were bold and vibrant and made sure the female audience would be attracted to the front cover. I think I did successfully convey this certain concept simply with the knowledge of what girls my age like, and making it look as interesting, elegant and appealing as I possibly could.

Are you happy with your final piece? Are there any elements you like in particular?
Overall I am very pleased with the final outcome of my final piece, I like the colours I have chosen and mainly the red aspects of the magazine cover because they're really eye catching and draw your attention. I also like the cover lines I have used as they really appeal to me. I really like the order of the features, and I think the main colours look great together as a whole. However, if I was to do it again, there are various elements that I would change. I would like to have taken a brighter picture because I feel the hair and jacket are just too dark and make the front cover look dull. Maybe we could have solved this by taking a few photographs outside to enhance the brightness with the natural light. I feel the picture would have looked a lot more professional if there had been natural light. Also I think if I had chosen a portrait, front on image of Charlotte rather than a side on image, I would have had a more elegant and more sophisticated final magazine cover.

Project Evaluation

What was the theme for the project?
The theme for the project was Little Red Riding Hood and the project we did was designing our own Book Covers based on the book Grizzly & Ghastly Poems by Roald Dahl.

How have you developed your ideas? How did your work change through the project?
I developed my ideas by looking a book covers online and discussing with my peers about the ideas we had also I researched relevant photos on the internet in order to gain ideas. My work did change half way because  I decided to start again from scratch but only because I knew I had enough time to start again and I am glad that I did because unlike the first time I am pleased with the final outcome.

How much reference material did you find? Do you think you should have done more or less?
Well Sir had available material that we all used however I am glad I found my own. I found quite a bit of material from the internet and I also looked at books, however I think I should have found more reference material because at points I lacked ideas whereas if I had more material that might have prevented that from happening.

What artists or designers have you looked at to help and inspire you?
I looked at Scott Campell and I have to say his work definitely inspired me, I did a double page of his work in my sketch book using watercolour.

What materials, tools and techniques did these artists use?
Scott mainly used water colour in his work, he was quite a messy artist because he painted very loosely

How have your skills developed during the project?
My drawing skills have developed because we used such a wide range of media eg, gouache, ink, charcoal, chalk etc. My skills on Photoshop and Blogger have definitely improved because I was completely new to both of them and it was the first time I had used both Blogger and Photoshop.

Are there any aspects of your studies that you wish you had explored further?
Personally I think I should have had more reference material so that I could have referred to because that will have given me a wider range of resources to gain more ideas from.

How have you used formal elements such as line, tone, colour and shape?
Yes I have, I think I have used each element. I used a variety of lines and shapes, pretty much all of my cover is hand drawn so it contains a variety of shape, but then again Photoshop contributed to the shape too.

What materials did you use, and why? Did they work successfully?
Mostly all of my front cover was hand drawn with biro or fineliner and then either left or drawn over with ink, I used some fonts from dafont.com and included them in my book cover, I think the fonts work really well and all the images gel well together and look like one main image.

What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
My intention was to convey a friendly and intriguing message to children or younger readers. I think I have succeeded in this because I purposely haven't made it scary so it appears nicer to the buyer.

Are you happy with your final piece? Are there any elements you like in particular?
I am very happy with final piece, personally I like the house on the left hand side as it's quite inviting and the path with Little Red Riding Hood walking up to it.

Is there anything you would change? Why?
If I could change anything I would create a background to set as the background of my final piece so that the background wasn't left plain and basic.
